Outdoor Game, Online Disaster *UPDATED*

As the first period of today's milestone game came to a close, the host Spokane Chiefs held a 4-1 lead over the visiting Kootenay Ice. The period was highlighted by slick passing and scoring and was punctuated by a pair of fights. Unfortunately... no one outside of Avista Stadium could see it.
Shaw TV coverage in Canada on both television and online was not available "due to technical difficulties". Fans in the Pacific Northwest of the United States are apparently going to be able to see the game albeit on a tape delay sometime late tonight.
There's really only one way to describe the turn of events for WHL fans who wanted to share in the viewing of the 1st ever outdoor WHL game: (see above)

This time of year The Pipeline Show spends a lot of time looking ahead to the World Junior Championship, one of our four "Majors" on our annual calendar. That said, we certainly didn't forget the massive spectacle that the NCAA put on last weekend and we also looked to the AHL for an update on some key prospects at that level.

We kicked things off Tuesday night by running through the invitation list put out by USA Hockey for their World Junior camp. Both Guy and I were surprised that for a second straight year, the Americans aren't having any competition for who makes the team in net, and we discussed a few guys that didn't make the grade.

The 1st outdoor junior hockey game in Canadian history... the top ranked defenceman from the WHL for 2011 as well as his legendary coach... a tour through arguably the most competitive conference in the NCAA... and discussions on the top NHL netminders under 25 years of age and the struggles of some Canadian teams in the big league. A loaded show is right but really, should you expect anything less?

Top 5 Tuesday: NCAA Stories This Year

The NCAA season begins this weekend, highlighted by the IceBreaker in St. Louis featuring Boston University, Wisconsin, Holy Cross and Notre Dame. With a new season come new questions, especially considering how much rosters have changed for many teams since last year. That happens every summer but it seems to have really impacted some teams more than normal this year.
With that said, here are 5 stories I'm watching for this year in the NCAA...

Outdoor Game Coming, Tri Hires Associate Coach

We've talked about an outdoor game in the WHL for a while now, you can read about it here and here. WHL commish Ron Robison told us they tried to have a game during last year's World Junior Championship but it just didn't come together in time. TELUS field in Edmonton has been talked about as a possible site as well, but now it appears that the Hitmen and Regina Pats will hit the great outdoors, in Calgary when the Flames and Montreal do the same in the NHL. More details when they become available.
Also, you might have read this (or you might have read it a few hours or days later at another WHL blog) about how Scott Beattie was in the lead to replace Terry Virtue as associate coach in Tri City. Well the Americans have made our prediction come true, and you can read about it here.
One last item for now, word is Jim Hiller was not only in contention for an assistant coaching job with Atlanta in the NHL, but was also talking to Norfolk of the AHL. Tri City G.M. Bob Tory, has told someone close to TPS that Hiller is indeed staying with the Americans, but didn't deny that he was up for the job. Our excellent, time-tested and reliable sources told us that. A good journalist never reveals a source, some veterans should know that.

German Attendance Record About to be Smashed

Thursday's outdoor game at Veletins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany between the host nation and USA was memorable for two reasons. First, Germany won the game beating the Americans 2-1 in overtime and secondly, the 77,803 fans who packed the soccer stadium represented a record number of people to take in a hockey game.
The Germans like to party and they hooted and hollered, chanted and chortled throughout the entire contest, some may have even cared about the game. I am half kidding - I know there is a dedicated following for the sport in Germany but having been in the crowd at the Heritage Classic in 2003, I can tell you that being able to say you were there is probably as satisfying (if not more than) than actually living through that freezing experience. For now, congratulations to Germany for putting on a big show and setting the new record.
Enjoy it while you can because in 8 months your record is going to be just another footnote. Circle Dec 11th on your calendar and prepare for what is bound to be a hockey spectacle like no one has ever seen before.

AHL Prez On Deck For Aircraft Carrier Game

A couple of weeks ago the AHL held an outdoor game which featured the Syracuse Crunch and the Binghamton Senators. This past Tuesday evening on The Pipeline Show we had the opportunity to speak with AHL President Dave Andrews about that event as well as some other timely subjects. We touched on this year's version of the outdoor game and our conversation grew from there.
You'll recall that last year it was reported right here at Coming Down the Pipe that there was another proposal for an outdoor game which would have captured the imagination of hockey fans everywhere. Something so incredible that "it couldn't possibly be legitimate". An idea "too good to be true" "bordering somewhere between fantasy and ludicrous".

Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!
The title of this blog is a quote from Admiral David G. Farragut - American Navy's first four-star Admiral.
The reason I bring it up is because the Norfolk Admirals could make hockey history next year.
A source has told me that the AHL club is trying to plan an outdoor game on the DECK of the USS Eisenhower, that just returned to Norfolk after a 6 week deployment in the Arabian Sea. The ship can accommodate up to 5000 fans.
No date has been set, but I'm hearing the game will take place after the upcoming New Year.
For obvious reasons if this happens, in my opinion, this would be the coolest outdoor game so far, and maybe for years to come.

The Geat Outdoors for the WHL?
I've been hearing for a while now that the Western Hockey League is planning an outdoor game, possibly next season. The site I've heard is Taylor Field in Regina. Makes sense to me. Can fit a lot of fans into stands, would bring whole province in for it and keeps it in the prairies which is the heart of the WHL. This week the WHL awards and bantam draft are being held in Edmonton so I'll be trying to sniff out the details on this.
