Oilers Deal Penner for Picks and 'The Punisher'

~
The Edmonton Oilers have dealt veteran forward Dustin Penner to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect blueliner Colten Teubert, a 1st round pick in 2011 and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2012. The LA Kings obviously get the best warm body in the trade but the Oilers certainly get some pieces to further along their rebuild.

Oilers Acquire Montgomery for Belle

The Edmonton Oilers announced a swap of AHL defencemen before lunch as they have sent Shawn Belle to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Kevin Montgomery. Montgomery is a 6'2, 188 lb rearguard that hails from Rochester, NY. A little more about the newest Oiler follows...

The Value Of Hemsky and Smid

*
Ales Hemsky's name has been coming up quite a bit lately in trade rumours. Tonight on Edmonton Sports Night Live with Corey Graham on the TEAM 1260 in Edmonton, my TPS co-host Guy Flaming stopped by and they talked about the possibility of an Ales Hemsky for Brayden Schenn straight trade. They put the question out on the TEAM's facebook page and asked for feed back.

WHL scores TD with Outdoor Game

~
A Day after the NHL held it's Heritage Classic, the WHL took over McMahon Stadium, and like so many times, a Saskatchewan team beat a Calgary squad. The Regina Pats blew a 2 goal lead, only to win it on a 3rd period 2 on 1 goal from 17 year old Dyson Stephenson set up by his brother Chandler.

TPS: Game Day from the World's Longest Hockey Game

~
Saturday morning we were live at "Saikers Acres" east of Edmonton where 39 guys and one women are into their 9th day at the Worlds Longest hockey game. They are trying to raise a million dollars for a special machine at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. This is a fantastic event to support and I can say that the Cross Cancer Institute is an amazing place that helped my wife battle breast cancer a few years ago. You can donate to the cause here and watch the game online here.

Rimouski Hard After Crosby Clone

~
On Tuesday night's show we told you about Nathan MacKinnon, a rising star who's turning heads at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax. There are a lot of similarities between MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby on and off the ice. The 15 year old is from Cole Harbour, just a few houses away from Crosby's family home. He currently plays at Shattuck-St. Mary's and wears the same #9 that Sidney donned when he was a Sabre. MacKinnon has put up loads of points in his younger days - 200 in 50 games as an atom, and 110 and 145 point seasons in bantam. Thankfully no one is comparing his game to Crosby's but he might be following another path of Sid The Kid.

Top 5 Tuesdays: WHL Overage Goalies

~
You might be wondering why I'm spotlighting goalies who have already gone undrafted at least once. With just 5 months left before the 2011 NHL Draft, scouts have had ample time to watch the notable players and most (if not all) NHL teams have had their mid-season meetings. I've spent a lot of time the last little while picking brains - talking to a lot of scouts in regards to this year's draft class. I've been asking about specific players or about a broader subject, like goaltenders. (You'll get the results of all those discussions soon by the way).

What I've come to understand is that the goalies in the Class of 2011, as a group, are not considered to be that strong. In fact, more that once I've been told to expect that an over-aged WHL goalie will get drafted before one who is eligible for the first time. With that in mind, here are the top 5 candidates to be that guy.

Dylan Wruck Sets Franchise Record

~

A four point night has catapulted Dylan Wruck to the top of the heap as he has broken the franchise record for points in a single season with 64. He may be small in stature but Wruck has been a giant for the Oil Kings this season. While the team dropped a hard fought 6-4 to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday, the Saskatoon product added four assists to run his February point total to 11 in just 7 games.

The old mark was 62 points held by both Jeff Lee and Brendan Dowd. Realistically, Michael St. Croix and Jordan Hickmott should also be able to surpass the previous record as they have 55 and 53 points respectively with still 15 games left to play.

T.J. Foster scored a hat trick and the Oil Kings closed a 3-goal gap late in the third period before giving up an empty netter to salt the win away for the Wheaties. Edmonton is in action on Sunday in Swift Current against the now 9th place Broncos.

Carbonneau To Coach Chicoutimi

~
TPS has learned that Guy Carbonneau will officially be named the new Head Coach of Chicoutimi in the next day or so.

The Saguenéens fired HC and GM Richard Martel earlier this week after an 18-22-4-6 record and 13th place standing in the QMJHL. He left his post as the league's all time wins leader with 589.

Carbonneau takes over the reins and gets back behind the bench for the first time since being fired by the Montreal Canadiens mid season in 2009. He was doing some broadcast work for Hockey Night in Canada.

During his 2 and a half years with the Habs Carbonneau, who has the best defensive forward award in the Q named after him, was a finalist for Coach of the Year in 2008 losing to Washington's Bruce Boudreau.

NCAA Canadian Invasion Underway

~
Above is a picture of the CN Tower. If you're taking in Toronto and checking off your list of "Touristy things to See and Do", it's probably near the top of it. A Leafs game at the ACC? of course. The Hockey Hall of Fame? Check. The Art Gallery? Done. Casa Loma? Yep. Queen Street? Sure. Blue Jays baseball or Argonauts football at Rogers Center? Uh huh. The Indy race if you're lucky? You know it.

What's left? Well... how about taking in a NCAA hockey game too?
