Hockey East and the NCAA championship game seem to go hand in hand. At least they did until last year. The 2011 final was the first time the bouncers kept them out of the party in 6 years. From 2006-2010 Boston College or Boston University reached the final with the Eagles winning twice and the Terriers once. So will the beasts from the east return to the big dance and if so, who's the favourite? We previewed the conference with Jimmy Conelly who covers the league for USCHO.COM.

Tuesday Recap: August 23rd

After one of the best episodes of The Pipeline Show last weekend the only way we could possibly follow it up was with another stellar line up of guests and that's what we were able to come up with for last night's show. A league commissioner made his TPS debut, we got the no-B.S. insight on the Plymouth Whalers and their off-season activities, one of last year's top NCAA freshmen joined us, a NHL GM kicked off hour 2, we hit Kelowna for a pre-season update and ended the show in the midst of a hot debate.
If you caught this edition of TPS, we know you were entertained.

Oil Kings Lose Key Prospect to BCHL

If there is one thing the modern-era Edmonton Oil Kings haven't had a lot of over their 4-year existence it's big, impact centermen. Yes, Jeff Lee had a 62-point season in 2008-09 but that's about the end of the list. Can Travis Ewanyk become that guy? Maybe, although offensive production isn't what most are expecting of him. Jordan Hickmott was good for the team last season but at 6' and 185 lbs, he wasn't the kind of center we're talking about here.
What the Oil Kings have lacked is a 6'2, nearly 200 lb pivot that can step in and anchor the second line spot and give the team a pair of effective scoring lines. Unfortunately for them, that guy appears to have chosen the BCHL and NCAA over just such an opportunity here in Edmonton.

That was Michigan head coach Red Berenson's succinct explanation of his team's 2-0 upset win over heavily favored North Dakota last night in Minnesota. The Wolverines got a first period goal from senior Ben Winnett (TOR), withstood 40 shots from UND and then added an empty net goal from another senior, Scooter Vaughan, to advance to Saturday's National Championship game.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Notre Dame hockey fans, today it was announced that the program was losing another key player from their 2010-11 plans. Incoming freshman defenceman Jarred Tinordi has decided to detour from his NCAA path to the London Knights of the OHL.
The "luck of the Irish" right now must feel like a Karate Kid crane kick in the junk to Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson.

More Legal Trouble at Notre Dame

As has been reported by USCHO.com, 9 current and future members of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team were arrested over the weekend at a house party which involved under-aged players.
All of the players have been identified.
