One To Watch: New York Rangers

-
The New York Rangers had a pair of rookie skaters play their way to the NHL last year in forwards J.T. Miller and Chris Kreider. The 2013 draft wasn't a banner day as the club didn't have a selection until the 3rd round. Still, there are a number of intriguing prospects in the system for the Rangers but one in particular is coming to what could be a telling year.

2012 Choice: Michael St. Croix - The Edmonton Oil Kings leading scorer compiled 92 points including 37 goals. Both his goal and point total were down from the previous season when the team went on to capture the WHL championship. St. Croix had a good, not great year, which didn't help answer my question last summer; is he a NHL prospect or a career minor leaguer? At this point I lean towards the latter.

My pick for One to Watch in 2013 after the jump.

One To Watch: New York Rangers

-
The New York Rangers have managed make the most of the draft in recent years and at the same time they have exploited other franchises for their key prospects. The combination has led to a Stanley Cup contender with more top prospects still on the way.

Derek Stepan, Michael Del Zotto, Carl Hagelin and Chris Kreider were all Rangers picked and Ryan McDonagh was practically stolen from Montreal.

Potential NHL players still to come include J.T. Miller, Steven Fogarty, Boo Nieves, Brady Skjei and Scott Stajcer.

The player I have settled on for the conclusion of this 30-player feature series is someone I get to see on a regular basis and has the production to get fans excited.

Hemsky, Smyth and Possible Returns

~
The NHL Trade Deadline is exactly two weeks away. You'll be able to follow the day's events live as they happen in Edmonton on the TEAM 1260 as every on air guy at the station, including The Pipeline Show, will be a part of the festivities on February 27th.

The Edmonton Oilers are expected to be active and according to TPS weekly guest Daren Millard from Sportsnet, two forwards in particular are expected to move and both might be gone before the 27th.

We spoke with Daren on Saturday morning and in talking about Ales Hemsky and Ryan Smyth, the NHL Insider offered up possible destinations which opens the door to speculation on possible returns.

Oil Kings Lose Key Prospect to BCHL

~
If there is one thing the modern-era Edmonton Oil Kings haven't had a lot of over their 4-year existence it's big, impact centermen. Yes, Jeff Lee had a 62-point season in 2008-09 but that's about the end of the list. Can Travis Ewanyk become that guy? Maybe, although offensive production isn't what most are expecting of him. Jordan Hickmott was good for the team last season but at 6' and 185 lbs, he wasn't the kind of center we're talking about here.

What the Oil Kings have lacked is a 6'2, nearly 200 lb pivot that can step in and anchor the second line spot and give the team a pair of effective scoring lines. Unfortunately for them, that guy appears to have chosen the BCHL and NCAA over just such an opportunity here in Edmonton.

One on One: Dylan McIlrath

~
He was a bit of a surprise pick in June but the rugged Moose Jaw defenceman stood out in the Class of 2010 as the toughest rearguard available - enough for the New York Rangers to grab him 10th overall. Now after returning to the WHL from Rangers camp, Dylan McIlrath is focused on getting the Warriors to the post season and beyond.

I had a chance to speak with McIlrath before Moose Jaw's game against the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday.

10th - New York Rangers Draft Preview

~
Probably my (Guy's) personal favourite logo update from a few years ago, including the Statue of Liberty was a great idea that made it more representative of the city. The shield outline is still present tying it back to the classic logo so traditionalists didn't seem to have much of a problem with the new look either. Probably the most successful re-imagining of the Original Six crests.

Rangers Prospect Snap Shot

~
The New York Rangers are one of the "original six" franchises of the National Hockey League. They were an expansion team back in 1926 and won their first of four Stanley Cup Championship victories came at the end of the 1927-28 season. It was the first time an American team had captured Lord Stanley's Mug. The Rangers won the Cup again in '33, '40 and the most recent title came in 1994.

The Rangers missed the post season for 7 consecutive years from 1997-98 to 2003-04 despite having one of the largest payrolls in the NHL. After the lockout in 2004-05, the Blueshirts have been in the playoffs each year but have fizzled out early, not getting passed the second round.

The Rangers have had a mixture of bad luck, bad picks and tragedy when it comes to their failures at the NHL Draft. While they've made several strong picks over the years, especially in recent years, the team has had more than its fair share of misfortune as well. Netminder Dan Blackburn was forced to retire due to injury, cutting short what appeared to be a very promising career. Obviously the death of Alexei Cherepanov is tragic on its own but viewed strictly from a hockey perspective, it was also a blow to the Rangers' prospect ranks.

Here's a look at what's Coming Down the Pipe for the New York Rangers...

Fantasy Prospect Pick Up Of The Week

He not only leads all rookies in scoring, but Michael del Zotto (pictured courtesy Getty Images) has the most points among all blueliners as well. With a goal Monday night, he now has 4 lamp lighters to go along with 5 helpers. His 9 points are 2 more than former London knight teammate John Tavares.

All of this is pretty impressive for a guy who didn’t get an invite to Canada’s world junior summer evaluation camp. That’s right the NHL’s top scoring rookie and defenceman wasn’t being considered for the world junior team this summer, and I don’t think it was because they were expecting him to crack the rangers line up and be unavailable.

Del Zotto played his 9th game Monday night, and with 3 ppg’s one game winner and a plus 2 rating, it’s safe to assume his show on Broadway will run for the whole season. Especially the way he’s been quarterbacking man advantage on the club with the most power play goals in the league.

And that’s why Michael del Zotto is my fantasy prospect pick up of the week.
