Saturday Morning Special - Oct 23

~
The latest 'Gameday' version of TPS over the weekend is bound to get some people talking. Not only did our NHL Insider suggest that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a better position this year than the Edmonton Oilers (!) but he was also relentless in his verbal assault on Dean. We also spoke with not one but two players eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, we looked at the youth in the system of the San Jose Sharks and we chatted with a NCAA reporter who is one of the most opinionated out there when it comes to college and CHL debates.

We started the show with a look at the CHL and NCAA action from Friday night including the Oil Kings game at home against the Kamloops Blazers. Some interesting developments from those games including the continued scoring pace of both Sean Couturier and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the CHL and Carter Camper in the NCAA.

David Pollack of the San Jose Mercury News joined us to help preview Saturday night's game between the Sharks and the Edmonton Oilers. We focused on some of the young guys in the system including Logan Couture, Benn Ferriero, the plethora of goaltenders and more.

Segment 3 featured the NCAA and the man behind Western College Hockey Blog, Chris Dilks. You've seen the link to that site posted on the right for a long time now but this was Chris's first appearance on the show. We covered a number of subjects including the hot start of Nebraska-Omaha and how the WCHA landscape has changed with the Mavericks and Bemidji State joining the Conference. How have the Notre Dame Fighting Irish responded so well after their 'Summer of Hell'? Why didn't the news of Nashville prospect Taylor Stefishin not make more waves in NCAA news circles? Chris also gave us his perspective of players who leave the NCAA or skip their commitments and head to the CHL. Lastly, Dean asked Chris to comment on some of his harsh criticisms of the CHL and the Canadian University programs that he's made on his site.

We asked Daren Millard, our NHL Insider, to compare the rebuild strategies of the Toronto Maple Leafs (free agents) and the Edmonton Oilers (drafting) and which one will be more successful in the long run. I'm not sure how many Edmonton fans will like hearing what Daren had to say but at the same time... was he wrong?? We also talked about Philadelphia netminder Sergei Bobrovsky and if he's the long term solution to the Flyers goaltender question. Who of the teenage NHL rookies might be most likely on their way back to the CHL? We asked Daren and he gave us his opinion... was it Taylor Hall? And finally, having two Millards on at the same time provides a wealth of verbal jabs between the brothers and this week, Daren scored a KO with a low blow on Dean.

In our 2011 Draft Preview segment we heard from a pair of Kamloops Blazers: Dylan Willick and local product Colin Smith (photo: Andy Devlin). Both players took on the Oil Kings the night before and we talked to them about that game as well as the current year that happens to be their draft season.

It was a very busy show and "If you missed it live... click the archive" which you can do RIGHT HERE.
