Tuesday night on The Pipeline Show, Dean Millard and I had a chance to welcome Soo Greyhounds defenceman Darnell Nurse back to the program. Of course we had talked to him during his draft year but it was good to catch up and see how he's viewing the coming season.
During the course of our conversation we discussed the recent Young Stars tournament held in Penticton and how he felt about the way he played and just the general vibe amongst the Oilers prospects compared to last year.
As it was on Tuesday evening, we also teed up the annual Oilers rookies VS UofA Golden Bears game. Nurse gave us his thoughts on that contest and told us what goes on between players on the ice that fans don't necessarily know about.
We also touched on his situation with the Soo Greyhounds and the outlook for that club this year. While we were discussing his OHL club team, we touched on the leaving of former GM Kyle Dubas and what he meant to Nurse's career.
The topic of hockey analytics came up and we asked Nurse how much stock he puts into them from his perspective as a player.
All of that and more, after the jump...

Saturday Morning Special - Sept 10
~
It's not every show that we have a member of the NHL Hall of Fame on the program but that was the case today. Plus we spoke with another CHL General Manager, a WHL assistant coach who was in Europe this summer spreading the gospel of hockey, we heard from a writer from USCHO.com who has been outspoken against the CHL scholastic program and we chatted with the head coach from one of the top CIS hockey programs in Canada.

The National junior championship will be decided on Sunday at the final of the 2011 Memorial Cup. Obviously that major event was front and center on The Pipeline Show this weekend but, as always, we looked ahead to the NHL Draft next month plus touched on the Stanley Cup final as well. We spoke with two scouts, two players as well as our regular Saturday NHL Insider plus it was CHL awards day... how did we do with our predictions?

As reported by our CHL insider Sam Cosentino from Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday night the Soo Greyhounds have hired 25 year old Kyle Dubas as their new General Manager. Dubas has a long history with the club and most recently was a player agent. The official release can be found here. TPS had already put in a request to speak with Dubas before he was hired and we hope to have him on our show tomorrow morning 10-12 mst. (Now confirmed)

From a Penguin to a Greyhound?
The Soo Greyhounds could be close to filling their vacant General Manager position. Several sources have told TPS that Ron Pyette, currently a Pittsburgh Penguins scout is the favourite to get the job. We've been told that Pyette interviewed last week and could be named GM by April 15th. The move makes sense as Pyette is from Sault St. Marie according to his bio from his time with Hockey Canada, which would make the move from his now home town of Calgary much easier. Every person I have talked to today has had nothing but good things to say about the current Penguins scout, from his time with Hockey Canada to his job as an NHL scout. I'm told he always takes the time to talk to coaches and get to know the person, not just the player.
